Do not disturb

Heretofore seen only in captivity, in the controlled habitat of a school classroom, and indeed, thought to be extinct in the wild (if not an entirely mythological creature altogether), A Boy Sitting and Reading was spotted recently in the suburbs outside Boston.

His appearance caused much consternation and a flurry of activity, including a shushing of all other possibly distracting living beings at one nearby home, and a blur of flashbulbs. One particularly crazed witness was heard making desperate phone calls to neighbors and to a nearby school, and yelling into the receiver, "Come see! Come see! Lookit! Lookit! I am too a good mother!"

There was even an ignoring of the need for sunscreen and previously unthinkable offers of lemonade and cookies - before dinner! - were made in hopes of encouraging the beast specimen to settle in longer.

This particular Boy Sitting and Reading, which weighed in at about 70 pounds and measured almost 56 inches in length, is thought to be approximately 8 years old. His stay was reported to be about 45 minutes, though those reports are unreliable because witnesses were in too much shock to be trusted with recalling specific details.

In hopes of attacting him back to the area, his mother went out and bought the sequel.

Even though it was in hardback.

The folks over at humor-blogs know how to raise boys who like to read. And make cupcakes.

That's excellent.

Y'know what? It's not easy to raise a boy who likes to read. Good for you.

Don't hate me, but I actually yelled at my kids for reading too much today. I know, I know! But they were irritating me. So I sent them out to play in the rain.

I remember when I used to do this when I was little...and after about 6 years of not doing it (besides with Stephen Colbert's book), I'm finding myself reading again. I have four books on hold at the library! I don't know what's happening to me.

Our library bribes children to read in the summer. For every X number of minutes they read they get a prize. Course Daughter (10 years old in 2 weeks) is checking out Dr. Seuss and Barbie storybooks. She knows how to work a system that one.

Oh what a great portrait and story. Excellent coverage. Great work to whoever is raising this wild untamed beast!

My six-year-old son is an excellent reader yet I haven't been able to find him anything he WANTS to read. I would gladly purchase a hardback!

As an educator, I LOVE this story! As a mother of two boys, I totally relate. I will never forget the summer my youngest just had to have the book on fungi of the feet. It was sick but he read it!

Very exciting! How lucky you were to capture this rare specimen on camera. I hope the author of the book has a whole series with which you can feed to Boy Sitting and Reading. :D

I'm so pleased you managed to obtain photographic evidence of this alleged Boy Sitting and Reading, or else I'd have hardly believed you!!!

YAY! There have been sightings of one of these at my house too. What is yours reading? I need to get mine off of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

Do books about Pokemon count as well for solitary literary child moments?

The dreaded vice, that gateway drug, THE BOOK.

Soon you'll be in the poorhouse to support his habit.

You'll have to mortgage your house to pay your Amazon bill.

Then, the crimes start. Stealing books from brother's rooms, logging onto ebooks in the middle of the night.

Beware.

Will wonders never cease?

I recently came upon the ever rarer specimen, an Adult Male Reading While Wearing Reading Glasses, but attempts to photograph it were stymied when I fainted dead away from shock.

Wahooo! I wish I could get my son to do that! What's the secret? I've even bought him Tony Dungee's book. He loves him. I think he's read part of the first chapter. The book still sits on the end table waiting and longing for his return!

Over the years I've tried EVERYTHING to get him to like reading. NOTHING works. He stood in the book store and said, "There's nothing here."

See, if he and Jane get married (and dude, I am not sure whether to hope or to plot to keep them from ever meeting. On one hand--you and me--IN-LAWS! On the other hand, destruction of the world as we know it.) she'll have him reading all the time.

Or else.

Good that he's getting a head start.

Aww sweet! My girl loves books but she's only barely 2 years old and that might change when she's older. Hopefully not!

Great blog by the way. Love your funny stories.

Wow! I remember my mom trying to get my brother to read, and it was like pulling teeth. He liked sports, but even the books about sports (nonfiction or fictional) weren't active enough to really make him interested!

I was always with a book and could be found with the lights on reading well past bedtime.

I've run across this species on rare occasions and am trying to domesticate it. I can't seem to find the right bait. We read Magic Treehouse together but haven't seen too much of the solo reader.

My congratulations! You are too a good mother!

My ten year old son is a binge reader...he will sit and read three books within three days and then won't read again for months.

Fabulous!

Laurie (Moo!) said...

You glued the book to his hands, didn't you?

It is lucky you photographed this rare phenomena One never knows when it shall be witnessed again.

Have you filed an "i-report" on CNN?

You totally should. They eat that stuff right up.

and I thought boys reading willingly, for pleasure, was just a myth... certainly haven't seen anything like that around here!

Although, my 7 year son will read and memorise the TV listings!!
